Dry Ice
Blasting
what’s so good about dry ice Blasting?
-
Dry ice blasting is a non-abrasive surface cleaning method employing frozen solid carbon dioxide (CO2) pellets propelled at high velocities using compressed air. Upon impact, the dry ice pellets undergo sublimation, transitioning from a solid to a gas, lifting and dislodging contaminants, coatings, or unwanted material from the surface.
-
The rapid temperature change during sublimation causes a micro-thermal shock, aiding in the removal process without causing damage to the substrate. This technique offers a non-conductive, non-toxic, and residue-free cleaning solution, making it suitable for various industries and surfaces, effectively removing debris while being environmentally-friendly.
-
Every day, we engage in this procedure, comprehending its scientific intricacies. However, as we witness this immensely satisfying process unfold before us, we're transported back to a state of childlike wonder, marvelling at the magical spectacle unfolding right before our eyes.
-
Dry ice blasting is considered more environmentally friendly compared to some other blasting methods for several reasons:
CO2 Emissions: Dry ice blasting uses solid CO2 that sublimates from the pellets we use, and the returns to the gas it is made from. In comparison, other methods like sandblasting or walnut blasting might produce dust or particulate matter alongside emissions from the blasting equipment, contributing to air pollution. Dry ice media produces zero additional CO2 emissions during the cleaning process
Non-Toxic and Non-Abrasive: Since dry ice is manufactured by compressing CO2 gas by around 700 times, it is no more toxic than the gas it is made from and that we are surrounded by. Dry ice is not a destructive abrasive material, as it is about as hard as your fingernail.
No Secondary Contaminants: Traditional blasting methods like sandblasting or chemical cleaning often produce secondary waste or residue that needs proper disposal. Dry ice blasting eliminates this step as the CO2 pellets simply return to gas. Materials removed from the vehicle we are working with can be collected with a broom and shovel, and disposed of, mitigating the impact of the process in an ongoing manner.
Reduction of Chemical Usage: Methods involving chemical cleaning or abrasive materials can involve harsh chemicals or substances that might be harmful to the environment. Dry ice blasting negates the need for these chemicals, relying solely on CO2 pellets also reducing the demand for chemical manufacturing in the future.
